Dear Resident,

We are regularly seeing incidents where work vans and delivery vehicles are being targeted by criminals.

Offenders are either breaking into vans to steal tools, equipment, and parcels, or stealing the vehicle itself.

These crimes can happen quickly and in broad daylight, causing significant disruption and financial loss to businesses and individuals.

Whilst it is normally the vehicle that it targeted, we have recorded incidents where drivers have also been assaulted.

There are steps that can be taken reduce the risk of a van or the contents being stolen, and make drivers feel safer.

Advice for all van owners -

Keep the van locked when you are not in it and ensure you double lock it and the alarm is set.

Do not leave any valuables or "interesting" items on display.

Don't leave tools in a van overnight and consider using ‘No tools are left in this vehicle overnight’ stickers.

If you need to leave tools in the van, consider parking in a secure compound or locked garage.

Consider marking your tools and advertise that tools in the van have been marked, we recommend using Secured by Design approved marking products.

Use additional security measures such as steering wheel locks, we recommend a minimum of a Sold Secure Gold Standard full steering wheel cover.

Consider fitting motion activated CCTV that will alert you to movement near your van.

Fit a tracker, so if the van is stolen, it can assist in recovering the van.

Additional advice for delivery companies-

Ensure that vehicles are turned off during a delivery and the keys removed.

Ensure that vans are being locked when a delivery is made, even if only for a matter of seconds.

Keep parcels out of sight, and don’t advertise valuable contents

Fit CCTV systems that provide a full external view of the van and use signs to warn that CCTV is in use.

Consider body worn video for your drivers, these units will also pick up audio evidence.

Ensure your drivers have training to risk assess stops, will they get company backing to miss a delivery if the risk is high.

Use an incident recording system that drivers can complete if required, this will aid in the risk assessing of delivery areas and times.

If anyone is seen acting in a suspicious manner near a van or an area where vans regularly deliver to, ensure this is reported to the Police on 101, or if there is a crime in progress on 999.
